Tunstall Flood Defence Scheme
Client : East Riding of Yorkshire Council
We worked for East Riding of Yorkshire Council to deliver a coastal flood defence scheme in Tunstall near Withernsea on the North Sea Coast. We used both steel and plastic piles to form a 1.5m high flood defence wall with a flood gate on a bridleway to enable the public to continue using the bridleway. In total we installed 30 linear metres of steel piles and 76 linear metres of plastic piles. In addition we constructed a Penstock valve sluice to control water level in the existing watercourse.
We worked with the scheme designer to reduce the slope gradients to improve slope stability. A pile mat was built for piling operations and the granular material from the pile mat was then reused in the embankments as a fill material, reducing the need for transportation off site.
The West side for the works were adjacent to an 11kv overhead power line. The power lines were isolated for the duration of the driven sheet pile works. We liaised with NPG prior to commencing for the lead times required in the works programme. The adjacent road was closed to traffic for the duration of the works with a signposted diversion in place.
There are many holiday homes in the area and the works were timed to be finished before the commencement of the School Holidays.
