APPRENTICESHIPS – EARN AS YOU LEARN  Do you know anybody who would be interested in starting their career in construction with us? We are looking for apprentices throughout our operating area.  APPRENTICE SITE OPERATIVES  As an Apprentice Site Operative, you will gain experience by working alongside an experienced gang of site operatives as well as spending time at college (either day or residential block release). The apprenticeship will include learning a range of practical construction skills including drainage, roadbuilding and concreting. You should be physically fit, have good practical skills and enjoy working outdoors as a part of a team. Qualifications GCSE or equivalent Maths & English (Grade D/3) essential Other Driving Licence (Grade Full) desired You will initially be paid £5.40/hour but this will be reviewed as you progress. What do Site Operatives do?
  • As a site operative you will carry out varied roles, working with plant, equipment and materials.
  • Preparing site, unloading and storing materials
  • Installing drainage
  • Constructing roads and car parks
  • Laying foundations
  • Preparing and laying reinforced concrete
  • Installing and maintaining sea and river defences
  • Preparing and installing kerbs, block paving and paving slabs
Hours of work: You will initially be working 8 hours days, arriving on site at 7.30am, Monday to Friday. Site operatives generally work 7.30am – 5.30pm, but this varies depending on daylight hours, weather and site requirements. Reality Check: You could be travelling an hour or more to site in the morning, it could be cold, it could be wet. On the upside,

  • You be given the chance to progress within the company to become a Plant operative, Ganger, Site Foreman or Site Manager

Over a 2 year period the apprentice will spend 12 weeks training at Bircham Newton Construction College (near Kings Lynn) and will then gain experience out on site. Practical training for Civil Engineering Plant This course includes training on a selection of the following:
  • 180* Excavator
  • 360° Excavator
  • Dump Truck
  • Telehandler
  • Training covers a selection of the following as appropriate to the
  • apprentice’s chosen trade:
  • Operating specialised plant and machinery to performance requirements, including:
    • lifting and transferring plant
    • extracting and excavating plant
    • construction and formation plant
  • Transporting and discharging bulk material loads
  • Extracting and excavating materials
  • Lifting, transferring and positioning loads
  • Distributing, layering and consolidating materials
The apprentice will gain qualifications/certification in:
  • Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations (Civil Engineering)*
  • Level 2 Diploma in Plant Operations
  • Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Red Trained Operator Card
  • Level 1 Functional Skills
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
You will initially be paid £5.40/hour but this will be reviewed as you progress Qualifications GCSE or equivalent Maths & English (Grade D/3) essential Other Driving Licence (Grade Full) desired For more information please contact David Ling – d.ling@breheny,co,uk   APPRENTICE CIVIL ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN On a Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship you’ll learn all the skills you need to liaise between the engineers, management and operatives on a construction site, such as setting out, quality control and checking and reporting on progress. The course also covers:  
  • Safe working practices
  • Managing excavation, plant and piling
  • Laying domestic and large diameter drainage
  • Levelling
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Mathematics for civil engineers
  • Carrying out pre-pour inspection and testing of concrete
  • Planning and design process and environmental considerations.
Work You will be aiming for a supervisory or management role in civil engineering or construction. Academic Four GCSEs at grades A*-C or equivalent (must include maths, a science subject and English). You’ll also need to complete a Skills Learning exercise and maths test. Personal

Duration
  • Year 1 17 Weeks at College (or day release) plus onsite training.
  • Year 2 16 Weeks at College (or day release) plus onsite training.
  • Year 3  All employer based work experience with assessment.
On completion of the Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship, you’ll have these qualifications/certification:  
  • Level 3 Construction Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations
  • Level 2 Functional Skills (maths and English)
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
